Signs It's Time to Consider Replacement Windows

Most homeowners don't think about their windows until something starts to bother them. Drafts near the frame, windows that stick or won't stay open, fog or moisture trapped between the glass panes, and warped or discolored frames are all common signs that a window has reached the end of its useful life.

You'll also come across a few terms while comparing windows that are worth understanding. U-factor measures how easily a window lets heat pass through, so a lower number generally means better insulation. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass has a thin coating that helps reflect heat while still letting light in, and insulating glass uses two or more panes with a sealed air space between them to improve energy efficiency. None of this needs to be memorized, but knowing the terms makes it easier to compare what different companies are actually offering.

One note worth mentioning: if your home was built before 1978, ask any contractor whether EPA lead-safe work practices apply to your project. It's a standard question for older homes, and any reputable company should be able to answer it without hesitation.

Choosing an Entry Door

An entry door does a lot of jobs at once. It's the first thing people notice about your home; it affects how comfortable your entryway feels, and it plays a real role in your home's security. When comparing options, look closely at the door material, the glass configuration if it has any, the weatherstripping and threshold, and the locking hardware.

Before you sign anything, make sure the proposal clearly spells out the exact product being installed, what hardware is included, whether removal and disposal of your old door is part of the job, and what the warranty actually covers. If any of that is missing or vague, ask for it in writing before you move forward.

Roofing & Siding: What to Look For

Your roof and siding work together to protect your home from the outside in, so it's worth understanding both before starting a project. Roofing issues aren't always visible from the ground, which is why a proper inspection matters just as much as picking a shingle color. Ask about flashing, ventilation, underlayment, and the condition of the roof decking underneath, since problems in any of these areas can shorten the life of an otherwise good roof.

Siding decisions come down to more than appearance, too. Moisture management, proper wall preparation, trim detail, and insulation all affect how well siding performs over time. A good contractor should also be able to tell you upfront how they'll handle any issues discovered once your old siding comes off, rather than treating it as a surprise later in the project.

How to Read a Warranty the Right Way

A warranty is one of the best ways to judge the quality of a home improvement product, but only if you actually read it. Many companies advertise a "lifetime" warranty, then limit that coverage significantly once you get past the first line. Before you commit to any company, ask what's covered, what's excluded, whether installation labor is included, and whether the warranty transfers if you sell your home.

Our own lifetime warranty covers leaks and drafts, vinyl, color, glass, seals, parts, screens, and window operation for as long as you own your home, with no pro-rating, and it includes installation and service labor rather than excluding it. We built our warranty this way because we think a warranty should protect the homeowner first.

How to Evaluate a Home Improvement Contractor

The company you choose matters just as much as the product itself. Before hiring anyone, check that they're properly licensed and registered in your state, ask directly who is responsible for correcting installation problems, and find out what happens if you need service five or ten years down the road.
