Bay vs. Bow Windows

Both bay and bow windows project outward from the home, but their panel configurations create different shapes. Below are essential things to know.

What Is a Bay Window?

A bay window is constructed with three window panels that angle outward to create a pronounced three-dimensional focal point. Bay windows are common in living rooms, dining areas, and bedrooms.

What Is a Bow Window?

A bow window features four or more connected window panels, creating a rounded effect that’s often shallower than a traditional bay window.

Either configuration may create an interior area for plants, décor, or seating when the room layout and surrounding construction allow it. The appropriate option depends on the existing opening, available wall space, desired projection, and window design.

CUSTOM ASSEMBLY
Construction Details
Because these windows project beyond the wall plane, their construction brings together structural support, water management, insulation, and interior finishing. When you choose us to install your windows, the assembly includes the following components.
TimberStrand® Mullion Design
We use solid TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber mullions that are lag-bolted to the head and seat.
Turnbuckle Cable Support
Our adjustable cable support system supports the frame from above with a heavy-duty 6-inch hook and turnbuckle.
Window Panning System
PVC panning profiles wrap around and adhere to the vertical mullions and seat board, creating an interior gutter system for water management.
PVC-Wrapped Exterior
Exterior color options include White, Beige, Sandstone, Classic Bronze, and Coal Black.
Finished Interior Edges
Matching wood edge banding covers the exposed plywood edges of the head, seat, and side jambs.
Furniture-Grade Seat Board
The standard seat board is 1 1/4-inch furniture-grade oak or birch veneer.
Complete Assembly
Standard construction includes the head, side jamb, seat board, side wedge, mull cap, full insulation, and insulation to the jamb.

Exterior colors and interior finishes can be considered alongside the home’s siding, trim, and room design. We review the available selections while developing the custom window specifications.
